Not Pictured: four more discs
Simulation company Aerosoft has !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! that they are producing a 10 (that’s TEN ) DVD set of the new version of !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for the European market. MSFS 2020 will be released for PCs on 8/18, with a forthcoming date for XBox release. Aerosoft’s DVD set is tailored for areas with slower internet speeds, which would hamper the download of the 80-90GB file. Aerosoft will also be offering a 20 DVD drive though their online store.
Even in 2020, printing 10 DVDs is still cheaper than providing a USB thumb drive, which is kind of blowing my mind.

That wacky that it’s still cheaper than USB.
Also wacky: the first version of Flight Sim I ran was on a 36 0k floppy disk. And I believe that also contained the operating system. (* May have been DD 512k)

Economy of scale. It never occurred to me that you mass produce CDs/DVDs/BDs just like you do with records.
But it’s way faster than burning them.

That screenshot brings back so many memories of playing this as a little kid and really just trying not to immediately crash. For added fun, the family computer didn’t have joystick so it was punching the keys rapidly to roll the plane—left, left, left (too much), right, right, right...
So jazzed for this new release...

Christ. I couldn’t imagine trying to play FS on the keyboard.
I took a couple years of aeronautical classes in high school back in 94-96, and we had full custom rigs similar to this:
Still put more than one C152 into the lake off Meigs....

Heh, saw you over in the Arstechnica comments...
In any event, it feels a bit absurd that anyone still using optical discs hasn’t upgraded to blu-ray at this point. And yet when I bought a new portable drive, I just got DVD instead of blu-ray since the blu-ray ones were really expensive (I paid $38 for my last blu-ray drive, though it doesn’t support the newer higher density discs). And actually I don’t even have any 5.25" drive bays in my current desktop though, my HTPC has a blu-ray/HD-DVD combo drive (also not up to reading the newest stuff obviously).

Don’t they do the same with USB drives now? Most drives I’ve ever bought had some kind of manufacturer bloatware/ software already on it.
DVD obviously could still be cheaper by the dozen(millions) , but size/weight/packaging/shipping would be less w/USB.

I think the rise of broadband internet and streaming services meant that most people just gave BD drives a pass. I’m still rocking my 10-15 year old Cyberpower desktop to which I added a Lightscribe CD burner and a BD burner.

Honestly, that’s impressive given how large the game is.

True enough, but I’d think that if you had such crappy internet you were going to buy the boxed version, you would have invested in blu-ray long ago.
